The Central Railway (CR) commercial department has announced its plans to establish a prefabricated movie theatre at Dombivli station and a campground at Palasdhari. Palasdhari is halfway between Karjat and Khopoli stations. The main goal is to capitalise on rail assets and boost non-fare revenue.
However, people have expressed concerns, stating that CR should prioritise ensuring that trains depart on time. The CR authorities have released a call for bids, which will remain open for business for ten years. The movie theatre would be a prefabricated one that could be placed in a corner of the station's grounds. It will make INR 47.85 lakh off of this every year.
Train passengers have reported that CR authorities are turning away from their main responsibilities. They also expressed concerns that a movie theatre in a station like Dombivli would only increase traffic.
In addition to the movie theatre, the CR authorities are planning a picnic area near Palasdhari Dam. For Palasdhari Dam, a five-year tender has been put out to set up and run nature camping operations. It will be opened on November 30. This will result in tourist-related activities that will result in non-fare revenue generation. The railways stand to gain INR 27.92 lakh from this.
In addition to being a railway junction on the Karjat-Khopoli route, Palasdhari is a well-liked tourist destination. The dam there is owned by CR and is located a few kilometres from the station. A total of 10006.06 square metres of land will be set aside for this.
The licensee will be permitted to develop the land at Palasdhari Dam into a campground for tourists. The location will have fish farming, a boat club, water sports upstream of the dam, tents, a garden area, a playing area, a café, restrooms, and both indoor and outdoor sports under lifeguard supervision.
However, train commuters who live in the northern portion of MMR along the Central Railway track have questioned the reasoning behind a camping site.
