The Election Commission has taken a clear stance that the polling of the Lok Sabha elections in the state is over and the state government is trying to relax the code of conduct for drought relief. However, if the government gives a proposal for urgent works, it will be approved as per the rules, said a senior official of the commission.

The code of conduct has been applicable in the state since the announcement of Lok Sabha elections i.e. from March 16. Voting for all the five phases in the state has been completed. Among them, drought conditions are severe in some areas, especially in Marathwada, and some parts of the state have suffered heavy losses due to bad weather. Therefore, the government is trying to take measures for the distressed farmers as well as in the scarcity-affected areas. But due to the problem of code of conduct, the government cannot take any decisions.

The government had requested the commission to relax the code of conduct as the voting process was completed. However, the commission has rejected this request of the state government and has clarified that the code of conduct will remain in force until the counting of votes is completed and the new Lok Sabha comes into existence.

These proposals will then be sent to the Central Election Commission for approval and after approval by the Commission, exemptions from the Code of Conduct will be given for such works. Since the implementation of the code of conduct in the state, exemption has been given in 59 cases and henceforth the commission has clarified that the code of conduct will be strictly followed.

A Model Code of Conduct has been implemented for the election of Mumbai Graduates and Teachers, Konkan Graduates and Nashik Teachers constituencies of Vidhana Parishad. The commission has also clarified that the code of conduct will remain in force in this constituency till July 5.
