Mumbai’s power demand is rising as temperatures continue to increase. Energy providers expect peak daily demand to cross 4,500 MW, which is 900 MW more than usual. Companies supplying power to 49 lakh consumers are preparing for the summer surge.

Since the start of the month, power demand has ranged between 3,500 MW and 3,600 MW each day. Tata Power forecasts peak demand will touch 4,500 MW, up from 4,307 MW last year.

Tata predicts that its own distribution demand will reach 1,100 MW, compared to 1,063 MW last year. The company uses AI and machine learning for precise forecasting and power optimisation.

Tata Power has secured 1,630 MW from multiple sources, including thermal, hydro, gas, solar, and wind. Company is also in the process of securing another 200 MW from renewable energy sources. It is also monitoring transformers, feeder pillars, and cables using thermal scanning. The company is also adjusting standard operating points to optimise load.

BEST, which supplies 10.5 lakh consumers, is also expecting a rise in demand. Its peak demand is projected to reach 1,010 MW, up from 950 MW last summer. As per sources, current daily demand is around 730 MW, with peaks occurring between 12 pm and 4 pm.

Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited (AEML), which supplies 30 lakh consumers, is also preparing for increased demand. It expects its peak requirement to reach 2,200 MW, compared to 2,089 MW last year. The company has secured power through long-term and short-term contracts for uninterrupted supply.

Adani Electricity has signed long-term agreements for 1,300 MW, including renewable sources like solar, wind, and hybrid. It has also secured 500 MW through medium-term contracts and 700 MW through short-term contracts. Additionally, it has arranged for 300 MW via banking agreements. The company is looking to source 50 MW of renewable energy.

Mumbai’s weather has been unusually warm since February. The temperatures are expected to rise further this weekend after a slight relief from heatwave-like conditions.
