On Sunday, almost 56 hours after a fire broke out at the City Centre Mall in Mumbai, it was doused by the fire personnel in one of the longest firefighting operations ever.

The fire was brought under control on Saturday, however, the process of cooling the entire building was completed on Sunday. A mobile battery in a shop on the second floor of the mall had caught fire which eventually led to the entire floor being consumed by flames, according to a preliminary investigation.

The fire broke out at the City Center Mall in Mumbai's Nagpada area around 9 pm on Thursday. The mall has a large number of mobile and other electronics stores. About 14 fire engines and 17 jumbo tankers were engaged in the fire-fighting operation.

On the other hand, firefighter Chandrasekhar Tukaram Sawant, 55, who was deployed to bring the fire under control, started having breathing difficulties due to smoke on Saturday. He was rushed to Nair Hospital. Moreover, the number of firefighters injured in the incident has reached six.

A few days ago, the state's environment minister Aaditya Thackeray visited the spot and inspected the situation. Meanwhile, earlier this month, a blaze at a cutlery market in south Mumbai took almost 45 hours to be extinguished.
