In response to the escalating tree-related accidents in Mumbai, the state government has mandated the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to conduct free tree branch pruning within private housing societies starting next year.
The move comes after a distressing report revealed 435 tree and branch falling incidents in the city from June 1 to June 29. It led to eight fatalities and four injuries. Members of the legislative council also raised concerns over the growing number of such accidents.
To combat the alarming tree fall incidents, the industries minister, Uday Samant, announced that BMC would bear the expenses of pruning trees in private compounds of housing societies.
Additionally, the establishment of flying squads in each ward is being considered. The pruning exercise is scheduled to take place before the onset of the next monsoon season.
As the severity of the problem increases, various measures are being taken to prevent tree-related accidents. One such proposal was put forward by Sachin Ahir, a member of the state legislature. He suggested that victims of tree-fall incidents should receive compensation similar to that received by those affected by natural calamities.
At present, BMC provides INR 50,000 to the injured and INR 1 lakh to the families of the deceased in tree-fall incidents. The proposal aims to extend financial support to the victims and their families.
In recent times, the civic body has already taken steps to tackle the issue by cutting down around 1.5 lakh problematic tree branches as part of its pre-monsoon preparations.
