The High Court on Thursday granted bail to a 32-year-old accused of driving under the influence of alcohol. But while granting bail, the court sentenced him to stand at the Worli Naka Junction signal during rush hours and carry a placard saying 'don't drink and drive' every weekend for three months as community service. The accused is working in a senior position in a private company.
The name of this young man is Sabyasachi Devpriya Nishank. A single bench of Justice Milind Jadhav sentenced him to the above sentence to prevent him from driving under the influence of alcohol again. Nishank holds an MBA from the Lucknow-based Indian Institute of Management and hails from a well-to-do family. Despite this, he was driving under the influence of alcohol and defied the instructions of the police. Also, it is clear from the eyewitness evidence that he damaged public property. However, he has been in custody for two months. While granting him bail, the court explained that considering his age and future employment opportunities, there is no need for him to undergo further imprisonment. He was ordered to perform community service in another manner.
Accordingly, to create awareness about the ill effects of drunk driving, Nishank was ordered to stand at Worli Naka Junction with a traffic police officer holding a placard at the signal. Nishank should hold a placard of four feet by three feet in bold and large letters that reads 'Don't drink and drive'.
This punishment is for the next three months and he has to stand on the pavement for three hours every Saturday and Sunday, while granting bail, the court said in the order. Meanwhile, Nishank, who was working in a senior position in a private company, rammed into two police posts while driving under the influence of alcohol in November 2024 leading to his arrest.
