Mumbai has become the hub to unauthorised shanties. However, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), huts or shanties cannot be built at height of more than 14 feet.

Therefore, during the state assembly, BJP leaders have demanded for a white paper on slum encroachments.

Industries minister Uday Samant said that an IAS officer would be appointed to probe the illegal extension in the height of slum structures.

He also said that satellite mapping of slums across Mumbai would be conducted to identify illegal encroachments.

On Monday, July 1, a discussion was held in the Legislative Assembly regarding illegal slums and shops in Mumbai. Abu Azmi of Samajwadi Party raised the issue of illegal huts and shops in Mankhurd. Many members including Mihir Kotecha, Yogesh Sagar, Ram Kadam, Ashish Shelar raised questions about illegal constructions in Mumbai city.

Responding to concerns raised by the legislative members, Cabinet Minister Uday Sawant said that it cannot be denied that a large number of slums have been erected illegally in the metropolis. The construction of these multi-storied huts should be banned. Hence, a detailed inquiry report from the IAS officer of BMC about the areas where such high-rise slums are standing in the Mumbai metropolis will be submitted in the next session.

Interestingly, major accidents often occur in illegal slums in Mumbai, after which action is taken by the BMC for a few days. The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), which was set up to rehabilitate slums, has not undergone any major changes in 27 years.
