The rape and murder of a resident doctor in Kolkata has sparked outrage across the country. The Association of Resident Doctors has called for a national agitation for this. In the wake of this incident, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has instructed all medical colleges to formulate policies for the safety of doctors.
Incidents of abuse of doctors in medical colleges are on the rise. Therefore, all the medical college administrations in the country should devise a policy to create a safe working environment for all the employees including the professors, medical students and resident doctors in the college and hospital outpatient department, patient room, casualty department, labour room etc. While preparing this policy, adequate security measures should be taken by appointing female and male security guards at the workplaces, hostels and their open areas, open spaces in the hospital. So that doctors, staff feel safe.
Also, the commission has given instructions to the medical colleges to prepare a special route in the hospital premises for the safe movement of doctors, nurses and staff from one place to another, to arrange lights in the evening and night along with security guards, to install CCTV cameras in all sensitive areas of the college and hospital. .
The college management should immediately investigate the incident of violence against medical students. A preliminary investigation report (FIR) should be filed with the police. Also, the commission has instructed all the medical colleges in the country to send a detailed report of the action taken on incidents of violence in medical colleges and hospitals to the National Medical Commission within 48 hours.
