The Maharashtra government over the past few days has been revising its coronavirus death numbers. On Sunday, the state decided to reconcile the missing data soon after it received criticism from the opposition.
The Maharashtra health department revised its total COVID-19 death toll by adding up nearly 9,000 deaths in the total tally of coronavirus fatalities across the state. This has taken Maharashtra's pandemic-related mortality to 1.08 lakh now.
This massive data reconciliation exercise since June 1 has seen deaths being reported with a delay from Pune, Thane, Nagpur, Nashik, Aurangabad, Ahmednagar, and Yavatmal.
According to a statement by the state government, the highest single-day highest revised data was 2,213 on Friday, June 11. As the deaths from before that period were also updated on the state's COVID-19 portal, there is an increase of 2,288 deaths in the state's progressive death tally.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, June 13, the state recorded 483 COVID-19 deaths. Of these, 284 occurred in the past 48 hours and 199 in the past week.
This is for the fourth time in a week that Maharashtra’s COVID-19 death toll climbed to a new peak. However, the government release said such reconciliation is done every fortnight.
Earlier, refuting the claims of data fudging, state Health Minister Rajesh Tope on June 10, asserted that the Maharashtra government has not hidden the number of COVID-19 deaths. Talking to media over reports that around 11,000 fatalities in the state have not been reported as coronavirus deaths, Tope said the Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government is working honestly and in a transparent manner.
