The Mayor of Mumbai, Vishwanath Mahadeshwar has demanded a ban on illegal hookah parlours in the city from the Mumbai Police Commissioner Datta Padsalgikar effect immediately. The Mayor said that the required action must be taken up by the Police and the Municipal Corporation as a step towards protecting social security.

Large numbers of hookah parlours have popped up in Mumbai, especially suburbs lately and are very popular among the youth. 

The young generation finds access to all kinds of illegal drugs dealt in such parlours and is falling deep into an addiction trap. Often criminals and miscreants with criminal background are involved in these joints. The product of consumption of alcohol and illegal drugs and a bad company is resulting in the rise of juvenile crime cases in Mumbai.

Earlier, former mayor Shubha Raul took the campaign for hookah ban and had met with then President Pratibha Patil demanding an action against them. Also, at the last two legislative committee meetings, they requested a ban for the same. But numerous hookah parlours still exist in the city, running illegally without a proper license.
