The construction of the Gokhale Bridge connecting to the westbound arm of the Barfiwala Flyover is nearing completion. The road is likely to be open to the public by May 15. Reports stated, the connector between the Gokhale bridge and the westbound arm of the Barfiwala flyover has been built, and final touches are being added.
Karan Jotwani, a resident of Lokhandwala, who travels frequently on this route, told Mid-Day, “After the opening of the east-west section of the Gokhale Bridge connecting the Barfiwala Flyover, motorists will be able to travel faster from the Western Express Highway (WEH) towards the JVPD Scheme signal. This will save about 115 minutes. Hopefully, there will be no further delay in the opening of the bridge this time.”
Meanwhile, the area has been used by locals to park vehicles, including two-wheelers. A local resident, requesting anonymity, told Mid-Day that people have now been advised not to park on the western side of the flyover as it is expected to open next month.
Another commuter, Manish Sanghvi, said, "We are all eagerly waiting for the opening of the second phase of the Gokhale Bridge. This east-west connector will ease traffic congestion, especially for those travelling from Andheri East and Andheri West. We hope the BMC sticks to its May 2025 deadline."
The bridge was closed for traffic on November 7, 2022. It was initially expected to be completed by May 2023. But it faced several delays in the last two years. The BMC opened two lanes of the bridge on February 26, 2024, with height restrictions.
Currently, only light vehicles, including cars and two-wheelers, are allowed. Buses are still not allowed. The Gokhale Bridge project, which started in 2018, was initially divided between the BMC (for approach roads) and the Western Railway (for the bridge on the tracks). However, the entire project was later handed over to the BMC. It is now expected to be completed by May 2025.
A BMC official said, "The work on the western side of the Gokhale Bridge, which connects the western side of the Barfiwala flyover, is in progress. It is nearing completion, and the bridge is expected to open in May."
