A special committee of the High Court on Wednesday expressed displeasure that the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) has so far replanted only 724 trees out of 3,093 trees in 18 out of 28 station areas, despite repeated orders to restore the cover of trees felled for the construction of stations of the Metro-3 project from Colaba to Seepz.
The Maharashtra Legal Service Cooperation Department was ordered to visit these stations to resolve the issue of tree planting. MMRCL claimed that 36,000 trees have been planted and are being taken care of so far before a two-member special committee headed by Justice Revati Dere and Justice Sarang Kotwal. The committee has given orders to MMRCL to geo tag all these trees. However, the two-member special committee once again expressed its anger that it has not been done yet.
Also, we will order the presence of the project and technology director along with the managing director of the company and ask them to explain why the trees in the station area are not being restored, why the geotagging of the restored trees has not been done yet, it warned. However, following a request by MMRCL's counsel, the committee gave another chance to MMRCL to comply with the order in this regard.
