Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) provides drainage pipes, lights, and water for the residents who reside in MHADA’s colonies. In return, MHADA charges a specific service charge to the owners and the members.
However, for the last 20 years, MHADA’s 89 societies have not paid their service charge. Because of which, around ₹262 Crore is pending with the members.
Mumbai Repair and Reconstruction Board (MRRB) have been asking societies to pay up but the latter is not paying heed. The reason which, the MRRB sent notices to the society members and the owners of the flats asking them to pay the dues in 10 days.
In total, MRRB has sent notices to 1.83 lakh residents who reside in 89 societies. Since 1998, these societies have not paid the service charge because of which around ₹1 lakh to ₹1.5 lakh dues are pending. Out of 1.83 lakh residents, around 1.41 lakh residents have to pay the same.
Meanwhile, MRRB will recover the service charge with a new fare i.e. ₹1027, which was earlier ₹155.
