In a world surrounded by technology, people cannot stop themselves from taking a look at the LED screens every now and then. People have grown addicted to social media applications and one such application is WhatsApp. However, recently the instant messaging application has been in buzz due to a few unfateful incidents taking place in regard to fake messages going viral over the messaging platform.
In response, the government had demanded access to monitor messages on social media platforms by building a media hub i.e. a platform to monitor messages of all social media platforms of any person.
The Supreme Court during the hearing of the PIL filed by Trinamool Congress member, Mahua Moitra, said that if the government started monitoring messages on social media platforms then the situation of ‘surveillance state’ would arise.
Recently, the Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Limited (BECIL), a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the ministry, had issued a tender to provide a software for the project to the government. The people have been really upset by the government’s plan to build a media hub to tap into all social media messages of a person as it would a violation to one’s ‘Right to Privacy’.
