An RTI investigation has revealed that 103 hoardings on Mumbai’s railway land do not have registered owners. Activist Anil Galgali uncovered this issue after filing a request under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
The Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s Licensing Superintendent’s Office provided details about hoardings on railway properties.
A total of 306 hoardings are installed on Central and Western Railways’ land in Mumbai. Of these, 127 are on Western Railway land, while 179 are on Central Railway land.
However, the ownership details of 35 hoardings on Western Railway land and 68 on Central Railway land are missing.
The 127 hoardings on Western Railway land are spread across many wards. Three are in A Ward, one in D Ward, two in G South, twelve in G North, two in K East, one in K West, ten in P South, and four in R South. The owners of 35 hoardings remain unknown.
Central Railway land has 179 hoardings in different wards. Five are in E Ward, 10 in F South, two in G North, nine in L Ward, and 42 in T Ward. The owners of 68 hoardings are not recorded.
Activists have called for transparency in managing hoardings, especially after the recent Ghatkopar incident. It has been alleged that the mafia pressured officials to transfer an IAS officer. This was reportedly done to allow financial transactions without requiring approvals.
