The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has proposed a comprehensive plan centered around driver education, mental health, and vehicle technical soundness in an effort to protect the more than 5.5 million passengers it transports each day. The recent Kurla BEST bus tragedy and MSRTC bus incidents in Bhandara and Nashik have brought attention to the urgent need for safety measures and led to this decision.
A major step towards guaranteeing passenger safety and operational effectiveness was taken with the participation of prominent officials, including MSRTC Vice Chairman and Managing Director Madhav Kusekar.
Speaking on the matter, MLA and Chairman of the MSRTC Bharat Gogawale underlined the company's commitment towards passenger safety. During a meeting on December 11, Gogawale spoke to senior authorities and emphasised the significance of maintaining a fleet of technically sound buses, rigorous selection processes, and adequate driver training.
Step 1: Driver Training & Mental Health Initiatives
At the moment, MSRTC requires its drivers to complete refresher training every six months. Before being reinstated, these courses emphasise driving skills improvement and mental wellness. They are followed by practical driving examinations. In addition, Gogawale demanded that rules be strictly enforced, with a zero-tolerance policy for intoxication while on duty. He recommended looking into the potential of hiring private drivers under close supervision in order to address the driver shortage. Gogawale said that their ultimate objective is passenger safety.
Step 2: Old Buses & Supplier Accountability
MSRTC is facing a significant issue in satisfying passenger demand because of its fleet of 14,000 buses, many of which are approaching obsolescence. Gogawale gave the administration the order to delay the delivery of new buses by sending show-cause notices to bus vendors. In order to update the fleet and improve operating efficiency, he emphasised the significance of prompt acquisition.
Step 3: Should Fare Price Be Hiked?
The discussion also covered the financial issues that are being faced by MSRTC, such as the growing expenses of fuel, tires, spare parts, and personnel wages. MSRTC intends to present a proposal for a fare increase to the state government in order to ease financial strain. Since 2021, this modification has been pending, with the goal of ensuring sustainable operations.
An e-bus operated by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) recently crashed into the control room of the Mahamarg bus terminal in Nashik, killing a 23-year-old lady and injuring two more. According to Mahamarg police officers, the event happened on December 7, at approximately 10:30 pm. Keeping such accidents in mind, the MSRTC is planning to take these three steps.
