Mumbai's Byculla Zoo opens its gate for visitors - Check the guidelines here

The zoo was last opened in February 2021, after 11 months of being shut due to the pandemic, since March 2020. Though, after a month, the zoo was again shut after a second wave hit the city.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has opened the gates of city’s Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan and Zoo in Byculla, popularly known as the Byculla zoo for visitors from November 1, 2021.

However, in the wake of coronavirus, the civic body has appealed to senior citizens and children below 5 years of age to avoid visiting the zoo.

Moreover, there has been a change in the timings for ticket sale. People can visit the zoo between 9.30 am and 6 pm. The sale of entry tickets will be stopped by 4 pm unlike in the past when one could buy ticket up to 5.15 pm.

In a statement the BMC said, “Masking while in the public area will be mandatory for visitors and they also will not be allowed to store their belongings as the facility for storage in the zoo for the public is temporarily closed. Visitors are also appealed to not throw away their single-use masks and gloves if required in the premises but only in the designated disposal bins placed.”

In addition, the BMC has further said that gates and ticket counters will be shut immediately, in case of crowding at any given time owing to following social distancing norms due to COVID-19.

The public can expect to get the first glimpse of the two new additions to the colony of Humboldt penguins.

Besides, officials at Mumbai’s Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan and Zoo, recently announced that the premises will soon have two pairs of zebras which will be procured from Israel-based Ramat Gan Safari Park.
