Amidst the rising COVID-19 cases in Mumbai, on Monday, December 27, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner, Iqbal Singh Chahal examined the health infrastructure preparedness, reports stated.

Apart from this, Chahal told the civic officials to implement COVID-19 measures in Mumbai. He also asked them to update the list of beds taken from private hospitals as well as the jumbo COVID-19 centre's occupancy. Further, officials have been asked to augment the punitive action against those not wearing face masks in public places.

According to reports, officials were told to ensure a regular supply of oxygen. Additional and deputy municipal commissioners and ward officers attended the meeting that was held at the civic headquarters.

Based on accounts, civic-operated hospitals and jumbo COVID-19 centres deans were asked to see to it that ambulances, manpower, equipment, medicine stocks amongst others were kept ready. Moreover, war officers were told to activate the 24 war rooms with the review of manpower, technical services and improvements were asked to be made.

In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Chahal remarked that the curfew doesn't mean everything will be shut after 9 pm, but only crowding at public places has been limited. He highlighted that there shouldn't be an assembly of over five people in public places.

Chahal added that restaurants don't have to shut at 9 pm and asked that they adhere to the 50 per cent capacity. Additionally, about the New Year's eve restrictions he mentioned that the curbs are in place for the said night on parties. 

With the scare of the new Omicron variant of coronavirus, the Maharashtra government has banned the gathering of over five people in public places from 9 pm to 6 am from December 25. Moreover, the BMC has banned New Year celebrations in the city.
