The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is set to undertake an eco-friendly development of the Atkoli landfill site and surrounding area. Bamboo forests and green islands will be created in various locations within this area, as informed by Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao.
The state government has allocated 34 hectares of land in Atkoli, Bhiwandi, to Thane Municipal Corporation for scientific waste management. This land, where mining of minor minerals had previously taken place, is now being developed by TMC.
State Government Provides INR 50 Crore Funding
The state government has provided INR 50 crore for the development of infrastructure at the Atkoli site, including a protective wall, security rooms, access roads, 22 acres of leveling work, and the creation of bamboo forests. This work will be carried out by the Municipal Corporation’s Public Works Department.
A protective wall will be built around the entire site, with bamboo forests planted along a 2.5-meter-wide strip. The area will also include 12 acres dedicated to waste sorting and 10 acres for grass production. Other infrastructure such as an office, security room, toilets, a 250-meter sewer line, and a 150-km access road will also be developed.

Completion of Work Within the Set Timeline
Commissioner Rao instructed the Public Works Department to complete the development of infrastructure, including the protective wall, bamboo forests, and leveling, within the specified time frame. He also directed the Solid Waste Management Department to ensure that residents living near the site are not disturbed by the odour or transportation of waste. For the smooth functioning of the project, rapid completion of the necessary power supply lines was also emphasized.
Bamboo forests will be planted around the entire perimeter of the landfill site. Additionally, green islands will be created in various parts of the site during this monsoon. Commissioner Rao urged careful planning and implementation of these measures. Green belts will also be developed around the entrance and local offices of the site.
The management of waste will be taken seriously, and once waste is dumped, it will be covered with soil. Effective spraying of odor-neutralizing and germicidal chemicals will be carried out, and after a layer of waste and soil is created, tree plantation will take place. Commissioner Rao stressed that these actions should be executed meticulously.
