Mumbai Police recently announced updates to the process of renting flats in the city, simplifying the process for tenants and landlords alike. An order was released on Friday, January 13, stating that people are now required to declare the rent property through one of two methods: online or by applying directly at the respective police station via registered post.
The new policy, which was announced under the leadership of the new special commissioner of Mumbai, Deven Bharti, aims to streamline the process of renting a flat in the city. In the past, tenants were required to obtain a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the police. However, with the implementation of the new policy, tenants will only need to declare their rented property through the online portal or by mail, after which the police will issue a barcode that can be used to update the police's website with the necessary information.
The order also specified that the address of the landlord and the rented property cannot be the same and that accurate information must be provided. Failure to comply with these rules may result in legal action.
The new policy announced by Mumbai Police is a welcome change for tenants and landlords, as it simplifies the process of renting a flat and eliminates the need for an NOC. The emphasis on accurate information and the potential consequences for noncompliance will also help to ensure the safety and security of all parties involved.
This move comes after Navi Mumbai police clarified last month that the issuance of NOC was not required, as there is no law mandating it. Police Commissioner Milind Bharambe had responded to complaints about tenants by issuing a notification stating that only the owner of the house needs to provide details of the tenant to the police station for record. He has to submit the Aadhaar Card copy and other details of the tenant to the police station. No society should force the tenant to procure an NOC. Though the onus is on the owner to inform the police station, even a tenant can do the same. However, in case of a foreigner, both the tenant and the owner need to furnish the documents to the police station. And this formality requires no payment to the police.
