Mumbai Rains Update: 2 killed as slab of under-construction building collapses in Vikhroli

While the arrival of Mumbai rains brought some relief to the citizens, the city is encountered with several challenges already. 

On Sunday night, June 9, Mumbai experienced heavy downpour along with thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty winds reaching 62-87 kmph. This led to waterlogging and significant traffic disruptions in several areas.

Moreover, owing to this, at least two people lost their lives after a section of an under-construction building collapsed in Mumbai's Vikhroli West area. The precarious parts were later removed by fireman using rescue tools.

As per officials, the incident occurred around 11:10 pm on Sunday, June 9, after a portion of the parapet (iron beam) and a slab of the G+5 under-construction building situated at Kailas Business Park, Near TATA power House, Park Site, Vikhroli West, had fallen, with some parts also hanging precariously.

Upon receiving information about the accident from the locals, the Mumbai Fire Brigade immediately reached the site of incidence and initiated rescue operations.

The deceased have been identified as Nagesh Reddy (38), and his son, Rohit Reddy (10). They were taken to Rajawadi Hospital by the locals in the injured conditions, but were declared dead on arrival.

It is pertinent to note that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai today, June 10. Additionally, the weather department has issued weather alerts for other regions in Maharashtra.

In 2023, the country as a whole received 94 percent of its long-period average rainfall during the monsoon season from June to September.
