An RTI query revealed that the Mumbai Traffic Police has taken action against 65,12,846 motorists for violating traffic rules in the last 13 months.
Between January 1, 2024, and February 5, 2025, of the total offenders only 20.99 lakh (20,99,396) vehicle owners have settled their fines, while 44.13 lakh (44,13,450) offenders are yet to clear their dues.
With this, a total fine of INR 526 crore was imposed; however, only INR 157 crore has been recovered so far. This leaves a pending whopping amount of INR 369 crore.
According to Mumbai Traffic Police, enforcement was carried out across 26 categories of traffic violations, with 41 traffic divisions and one multimedia division overseeing the crackdown.
Additionally, 47 motorists were booked for using unauthorised flicker and amber lights, imposing a fine of INR 23,500. However, only seven violators have paid a total of INR 3,500 so far.
The highest number of cases were recorded in the Marine Drive area, where 32 vehicles were penalised. But, only two offenders have paid fines totalling just INR 1,000.
Acknowledging the traffic police's efforts, RTI activist Anil Galgali pointed out that a lack of officers and staff is hindering fine collection. He emphasized the need for a special recovery drive to penalise defaulters.
Galgali further urged the authorities to issue digital notices to defaulters and consider stricter measures, including the seizure of vehicles belonging to major offenders. He emphasised that prompt action is crucial to deter habitual violators and ensure better compliance with traffic regulations.
