The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani on Thursday, August 15, shared updates about city's infrastructure projects during his Independence Day speech.

He announced that Mumbai will soon see five new fire stations in suburban areas. Two stations at Thakur Village in Kandivali (East) and LBS Road in Kanjurmarg West are already under construction.

Gagrani stated that the BMC will soon start work on three more fire stations, which will be located at Juhu Tara Road in Santacruz West, Mahul Road in Chembur, and Tilak Nagar.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade will also soon receive a 40-meter-tall turntable ladder to further boost its response efficiency. The goal is to improve the Mumbai Fire Brigade’s response capabilities. Currently, the city has 19 smaller and 35 larger fire stations.

Additionally, Gagrani also provided updates on the 'Chief Minister Clean Mumbai' helpline, which was launched a year ago. According to Gagrani, the helpline has received 16,617 complaints. Nearly 98% of these complaints have been resolved swiftly.

Gagrani discussed the ongoing modernisation of the city’s sewerage treatment plants (STPs). The BMC is working to upgrade seven STPs located in Worli, Bandra, Dharavi, Versova, Malad, Ghatkopar, and Bhandup.

These plants have a daily capacity of 2,464 million litres. Nearly half of this sewage will be treated in three stages to allow for reuse. This goal is to improve the city's sewage management and recycling capabilities.

A new water treatment facility is also planned for the Bhandup complex. The project is expected to cost INR 2,000 crore. This new facility will replace the existing one, built in 1979, which is the largest in Asia. The new plant will have the capacity to process 2,000 million litres of water per day, compared to the current plant's capacity of 1,910 million litres.

Gagrani also spoke about the ongoing coastal road project. The 10.58-kilometre road runs from the Princess Street Flyover at Marine Drive to the Worli end of the Bandra Worli Sea Link. The project is expected to be done by December this year. Different sections of the road were opened in phases, with the latest section opening on July 11.

BMC is also developing seventy hectares of open spaces parallel to the Coastal Road. A consultant has been hired, and bids are being invited for the development work. Additionally, the BMC has received a 48-hectare portion of the Mahalaxmi Race Course. This area is being transformed into a central park. Architects are currently being appointed for the project.
