The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced plans to build a new civic building near its headquarters. The project will come up in the heritage area close to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), earlier known as Victoria Terminus. The current BMC sports complex, which is across the road from its headquarters, will be replaced by this new structure.
The new building will be called the Town Hall Gymkhana. It is planned as a public space that will promote civic activities, discussions, and cultural events. The BMC is leading the project.
The building will be designed to match the Victorian Gothic style of the surrounding area. At the same time, it will include many modern features. It will have a glass dome, a rooftop café, capsule lifts, and a panoramic viewing gallery. The building will have five upper floors and one ground floor. Two levels of underground parking will also be added.
The glass dome and raised viewing platforms will give wide views of the CSMT, BMC headquarters, and other heritage buildings. The BMC’s internal planning department has designed the structure. The plan focuses on keeping the look and feel of the historic zone while adding new elements.
A modern civic hall will be part of the building. It will host public meetings, exhibitions, and events. The goal is to improve communication between citizens and the local government.
At the same time, a new sports facility is also being planned. As per reports, BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani has approved the project. It will come up in Tulsiwadi, near Mahalaxmi Racecourse.
The current sports complex is no longer enough to meet the needs of BMC staff. The new site was chosen because it is in a central location, has good connectivity, and is surrounded by greenery.
The new sports complex will have table tennis courts, badminton courts, a modern gym, and a swimming pool. Both the Town Hall Gymkhana and the new sports facility are now in the tendering stage. Construction will begin in phases after final approvals are received.
