Mumbai is set to get its first-ever horse carousel at Cooperage Ground in South Mumbai. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has invited bids for the project, which will use a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The carousel will have a capacity to accommodate 32 to 45 people.
The BMC will provide the land, while the winning bidder will be responsible for designing and installing it. It will also operate and maintain the carousel for the next seven years. Bidder will also need to submit a business plan and a revenue model for the project's success and long-term viability.
As per reports, assistant BMC Commissioner Jaydeep More confirmed the project, stating that the carousel project is worth INR 1.50 crore. He also mentioned that ticket sales will be permitted. The BMC has now opened the bidding process for the development of the carousel on a 5,000-square-foot plot at Cooperage Ground in Colaba.
The BMC's Mechanical and Engineering Department estimated a budget of INR 1.52 crore for the project in February 2024. The carousel is expected to be a major attraction not only for Mumbai residents but also for tourists from across Maharashtra and other countries.
The proposal for the carousel was initially presented to the BMC by former Colaba BJP corporator Makarand Narwekar in January 2024. Narwekar, along with Colaba MLA Rahul Narwekar, has been pushing for the project for over a year.
Cooperage Ground, earlier known as Ghoda Garden, was a popular spot for horseback riding, but the rides were shut down after an incident a couple of years ago. The BMC hopes that the new carousel will help restore the area's appeal and attract tourists back to Colaba.
