The Maharashtra government has approved the establishment of four new police stations under the Mumbai Railway Police. The decision was announced on Monday, March 3, through a Government Resolution (GR) issued by the Home Department.
The new police stations will be set up at:
The Government Railway Police (GRP) had earlier submitted a proposal for these new stations. The growing number of passengers on Mumbai’s suburban railway network and the Mira Road-Bhayandar stretch was a reason behind this.
Furthermore, authorities have also noted a rise in crimes along these routes. The Mumbai Railway Police have reported an increase in cases of theft and pickpocketing. Stolen items often include mobile phones, bags, and other belongings.
Incidents of sexual harassment at railway stations have also been reported. As per reports, officials believe that the long distance between existing police stations discourages passengers from filing complaints.
On the Central Railway (CR) line, the Kasara GRP station is 12 stations away from Kalyan. It is around 67–70 km away. The next railway police station after Kalyan on the Pune line is 46 km away, Karjat. On the Western Railway (WR) line, Borivali and Vasai GRP stations are 17 km apart.
Security concerns at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) have also played a role in the decision. LTT has become a major outstation train hub, attracting large crowds. Currently, security at LTT is handled by the Kurla Railway Police Station, which is about half a kilometre away.
The Railway Protection Force (RPF), managed by the central government, is also present at railway stations. However, the GRP, which falls under the state government, handles crime cases.
