The government has increased fines and induced imprisonment for the people who will be caught breaking the traffic norms. The new traffic rules have been imposed since March 1. The government is aiming to reduce road accidents, curb reckless driving, ensure road safety, and enforce stricter compliance with traffic laws.

Between January and November 2024, there were 4,935 traffic accidents in Mumbai and the surrounding metropolitan area, with 2,319 of those incidents occurring in Mumbai alone. There were 1,108 fatalities from the accidents, 299 of them happened in Mumbai.

Recently a 45-year-old man from met with an accident while he was driving his two wheeler. The bike collided with a car near St Stephen's Church. He sustained several injuries.

Earlier this month a video of a 24-year-old driving a BMW recklessly on Mumbai’s Coastal Road went viral on social media. He was detained by police for endangering lives and not following safety norms.

New Traffic Rules Of 2025:



Drunk Driving: The punishment for driving while intoxicated has been increased to INR 10,000 and/or six months in jail. Previously subject to a punishment of INR 1,000 to INR 1,500, repeat offenders now risk a fine of INR 15,000 and a maximum jail sentence of two years.

Using a Mobile Phone While Driving: The penalties for using a mobile phone while driving have increased from INR 500 to INR 5,000, indicating that distracted driving is now treated more seriously.

No Helmet/No Seatbelt: The INR 100 punishment for riding without a helmet has been increased to INR 1,000, and your licence may be suspended for three months. A punishment of INR 1,000 is also imposed for failing to wear a seatbelt.

Driving a Vehicle Without Documents: Lack of a valid driver's license carries a INR 5,000 fine, a potential three-month jail sentence, and community service. A punishment of INR 2,000 (INR 4,000 for repeat offenders) is imposed for not having insurance.

No Pollution Certificate: A punishment of INR 10,000 and/or six months in jail with community service are imposed for not having a pollution certificate.

Triple Riding & Dangerous Driving: It will now cost INR 1,000 to transport more than two people on a two-wheeler, and it will cost INR 5,000 to drive or race dangerously.

Not Giving Way to Emergency Vehicles: There is a INR 10,000 fine for obstructing ambulances or other emergency response vehicles.

Signal jumping and overloading: Overloading trucks now carries a INR 20,000 penalty, a sharp increase from the previous Rs 2,000 fine. Jumping traffic signals now carries a INR 5,000 charge.

Juvenile Offenders: If a minor is detected driving, they will be fined INR 25,000, imprisoned for three years, have their vehicle's registration revoked, and not be allowed to get a driving licence until they are 25.
