The Karnala Bird Sanctuary in Panvel taluka is set to become even more attractive for tourists as it will soon be revamped.

The sanctuary will get several improvements, including new play equipment for children, additional seating, animal statues and an open gym for fitness enthusiasts. The sanctuary will be renovated at a cost of INR 54.17 lakh.

Spread over 1,200 hectares, the sanctuary is a popular destination for nature lovers and tourists. Speaking about the renovation, Range Forest Officer Narayan Rathod said that minor improvements are made every year as it is a major tourist destination.

“This year, funds were secured for improved infrastructure. The approval was given in November and work started from December 2024,” Rathod informed.

The sanctuary will be equipped with fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) animal statues, and a multi-activity play system will be installed to replace old, damaged equipment. The management has planned to provide additional seating and has earmarked a separate space for an open gym. For cleanliness, new dustbins and toilet facilities will also be installed.

Last year, more than 75,000 tourists were recorded. The sanctuary management is optimistic that the improved facilities will attract more tourists. "The renovation is expected to be completed by the end of February," said an official.
