On Tuesday, May 28, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) organised a special night drive to crackdown illegal ladies’ bars, pubs, stalls and unauthorised dhabas.
The Navi Mumbai police conducted a joint operation with the excise department and took action against ladies’ bars and pubs, liquor shops, and several illegal roadside dhabas and Chinese stalls operating late at night. The operation resulted in fines totaling ₹1 lakh.
It was held under the instructions of NMMC Commissioner Kailas Shinde. The operation was led by NMMC deputy municipal commissioner (Anti-Encroachment) Dr. Rahul Gethe, civic officials and personnel. It began at 11 pm covering Belapur, Nerul, Turbhe, Vashi, and APMC areas under the instructions of Municipal Commissioner.
The drive was prompted by complaints from activists about violations and concerns over the impact of bars following the Pune accident involving a minor.
The civic body said that they have demolished the bars and pubs which were found using marginal space illegally. Moreover, unauthorised large boards were also removed. More drives will follow to eliminate the menace of illegal structures.
