On Tuesday, July 9, the Maharashtra government approved the expansion of the boundaries of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to Raigad and Palghar districts. This expansion was announced by the state government's urban development department in a Government Resolution (GR).

The new boundaries extend to the southern part of the Patalganga River on the eastern bank and the Pen Tehsil of Alibaug. This includes areas such as Khalapur, Pen, and Alibaug. Additionally, several talukas from Palghar and Vasai districts have been added.

With these additions, MMRDA's jurisdiction has increased from 4,355 square kilometres to 6,355 square kilometres. In other words, about 600 villages from Raigad and Palghar will be under MMRDA's jurisdiction.

As per reports, this expansion was proposed to help MMRDA manage its projects in these regions. Key projects include the bullet train corridor near Vadhavan, growth centres in Boisar, and the multi-modal corridor between Virar and Alibaug.

The expansion will promote local development. Initially, MMRDA was established as a planning agency. From 1995 to 1999, the Shiv Sena-BJP government tasked it with infrastructure development. Last week, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis requested that MMRDA also undertake slum restoration initiatives.
