The Maharashtra government has increased the registration fees for VIP vehicle numbers to up to INR 18 lakh. This is nearly the cost of a midsize SUV. Following the hike, the most sought-after number, "0001," will now cost INR 6 lakh in high-demand areas. Earlier, the fee for this number was INR 4 lakh. 

For other out-of-series numbers, the cost will be around INR 18 lakh in major cities like Mumbai and Pune. The previous fee for out-of-series numbers was INR 12 lakh. For four-wheelers, the fee for the number "0001" has increased from INR 3 lakh to INR 5 lakh. The fees for two- and three-wheelers have doubled from INR 50,000 to INR 1 lakh. 

The government has also identified 240 other VIP numbers in each registration series. These include popular numbers like 0009, 0099, 0999, 9999, and 0786. The cost of these numbers has also risen. For four-wheelers and larger vehicles, the fee for these numbers has increased from INR 1.5 lakh to INR 2.5 lakh. For two- and three-wheelers, the fee has risen from INR 20,000 to INR 50,000.

The cost for 16 specific numbers is now INR 1 lakh for four-wheelers, up from INR 70,000. For two-wheelers, it is INR 25,000, up from INR 15,000. Another set of 49 numbers now costs INR 70,000 for four-wheelers, up from INR 50,000. For two- and three-wheelers, it is INR 15,000.

The government has also revised the fees for 189 other registration numbers. This list includes numbers like 0011, 0022, 0088, 0200, 0202, 4242, 5656, and 7374. The new fees for these numbers are INR 25,000 for cars with four or more wheels. For two- and three-wheelers, the fee is INR 6,000.

In 2017-18, the Maharashtra transport department earned INR 139.20 crore from 1,83,794 registration number issuances. Additionally, the government has increased the time limit for generating a vehicle with a reserved number. The new time limit is six months, up from the previous 30 days. Government vehicles will now also have reserved VIP numbers.
