In recent developments, the Western Railways has been disinfecting the Lower Parel factory with the help of drones in order to contain the spread of the coronavirus along with other diseases. Over a period of twelve hours, over 15 litres of medicine has been sprayed. The Railways have further claimed that this was one of a kind experiment being conducted in India in a first.
With the onset of monsoons in Mumbai, waterlogging becomes a common sight. As a result of the water being stored in several low-lying areas, especially the slum clusters, water-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria, typhoid has been on the rise. This can pose to be a threat to railway factories.
Therefore, sterilizing the factory with the help of drones can actually prove to be useful in the long run. Furthermore, the railway factory has a large number of goods. It contains large quantities of local vehicles, scrap metal as well as other necessities. In addition, sewers pass through the factory. This happens to be a breeding ground for mosquitos and flies as mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. They can multiply very easily as well. Therefore, eliminating even small amounts of standing water can eliminate mosquitoes.
Earlier, a video of stagnant water with flies in the Lower Parel factory spread across the internet. As a precautionary measure, the Western Railway undertook the task of disinfecting the factory itself. For this, it was decided to spray the medicine by drones and not by the staff. Therefore, with the help of drones, certain remote areas were reached where factory workers themselves could not reach. The spraying occurred on railway roofs, gutters, sewers, water pipes etc. These medicines were sprayed every day for 12 hours from a height of 500 meters in the factory premises. According to sources, the work is said to continue for a few more days to be completed effectively.
