Andheri ESIC Kamgar Hospital Fire Update: State to give compensation worth ₹10 lakh to the kin of deceased

Besides giving compensation to the families of those who lost their lives in the accident, ₹2 lakh compensation will be given to each for those who have serious injuries and ₹1 lakh each for those with minor injuries

On Monday, a massive fire broke out at Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Kamgar Hospital at Marol in suburban Andheri where around eight people lost their lives and 142 were injured.

Union Minister (Independent Charge) for Labour & Employment Santosh Gangwar has announced a compensation worth ₹10 lakh for the next of kin of those who died in the massive fire.

The Labour Ministry statement said, besides compensation to the families of those who lost their lives in the accident, ₹2 lakh compensation will be given to each for those who have serious injuries and ₹1 lakh each for those with minor injuries.

Gangwar along with Secretary, Ministry of Labour & Employment and Director General, ESIC would be visiting the hospital on Tuesday to oversee relief work and meet the victims and their families.

An official of the Disaster Management Cell of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that a total of 147 people, including patients and visitors, were rescued after the fire broke out at the hospital.

The Ministry statement said while the exact cause of the blaze was being ascertained, the preliminary report said that building material, kept at the ground floor of the hospital for renovation work caught fire. A team of doctors from ESIC, Delhi was rushed to Mumbai for this purpose.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered an enquiry for the incident. On the other hand, MP Gajanan Kirtikar has demanded that the kin of the deceased must be provided with a financial compensation of at least ₹25 lakh.
