The Mumbai Police and Thane Police Commissionerate have implemented strict security measures for public safety during New Year’s celebrations. Over 15,000 officers are deployed across Mumbai, whereas 7,500 officers are deployed around Thane and surrounding areas.
Security Measures in Mumbai:
- Police presence in crowded areas, major event venues, and high-traffic spots.
- Patrolling and fixed security points will be set up.
- Nakabandis (roadblocks) in key areas to check traffic violations and enhance security.
- Strict action will be taken against drunk driving.
- Checks at establishments and high-risk locations to prevent harassment, public disturbances, and drug or illegal alcohol sales.
- Legal action will be taken against offenders.
- The security plan is led by the Mumbai Police Commissioner, Special Commissioner of Police, and Joint Commissioner (Law and Order).
- The strategy includes coordination between local police and traffic departments to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow.
The team in Mumbai includes 8 additional police commissioners, 29 deputy commissioners, 53 assistant commissioners, 2,184 police officers and 12,048 constables. Specialised troops will assist regular police, including State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) platoons, Quick Response Teams (QRT), Bomb Detection and Disposal Squads (BDDS), Riot Control Police platoons.
The Mumbai Traffic Police are conducting a special drive in which beer bottle mascots will distribute promise bands to drivers.
The campaign aims to promote road safety by encouraging drivers to avoid drinking and driving while adhering to traffic norms.

Security Measures for Thane:
- Special Surveillance Teams will be deployed at busy locations like train stations, bus stops, marketplaces, waterfronts, and jetty areas.
- Nirbhaya Squads will operate across all divisions to protect women from harassment and ensure safety.
- Flying Squads will monitor public drinking and addressing unruly behavior swiftly.
- Police have planned raids on party hotspots like picturesque locations, dhabas, and farmhouses.
- The security drive will focus on Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Ulhasnagar, and Wagle regions.
- Forty-one breath analysers have been placed at fifty-six checkpoints to prevent drunk driving.
- Drone surveillance is being used to monitor remote areas near Thane Creek.
- More than 500 traffic police officers will focus on stopping drunk driving.
- CCTV monitoring has been increased at hotels, lodges, dhabas, and suspected criminal hideouts.
- Special branch agents are tracking individuals displaying suspicious behaviour.
- Police have asked residents to report any suspicious activities or objects by calling 112.
The Thane team includes two additional commissioners, eight deputy commissioners, sixteen assistant commissioners, 118 inspectors, 315 sub-inspectors, 2,253 constables, and 378 women officers. They are supported by one SRPF company and three RCP platoons.
An “all-out operation” began in Thane on December 29, targeting wanted, repeating criminals and those with pending legal actions. Fines amounting to INR 7,28,150 have been collected under laws such as the Motor Vehicles Act, the NDPS Act, the Maharashtra Police Act, and the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita.
The police commissioner has asked people to celebrate the day responsibly while following the law. People are advised to follow Supreme Court guidelines for firecracker use during the festivities.
