Ulhasnagar has opened its first clinic dedicated to treating leprosy patients. The new facility is situated in Shriram Mandir Colony, Camp No. 4. The Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation allocated INR 15 lakhs for the project.
Camp No. 4 houses Ulhasnagar’s only leprosy community. The goal is to make basic healthcare available close to where patients live. The facility will offer free daily dressings and medications to leprosy patients.
The city's Public Works Department completed the construction under the supervision of Medical Health Officer Dr. Mohini Dharma and City Engineer Tarun Shevkani. Additional Commissioner Kishor Gavas and Municipal Commissioner Vikas Dhakne also provided assistance.
Before the clinic opened, patients had to travel to different hospitals, which made it difficult for them to receive regular treatment. Acworth Leprosy Hospital in Mumbai was the only specialised facility available to leprosy patients. It has provided care for over 134 years.
There had been demands for accessible medical care for leprosy patients in Ulhasnagar. The clinic was established with the help of the Netaji Subhash Leprosy Self-Reliance Association. Its president, Kalappa Hadpad, first proposed the idea of creating a dedicated clinic.
The clinic was officially inaugurated by Dr. Vasantrao Naik, City Engineer Tarun Shevkani, and consultant Pradeep Gaikwad. The opening of the clinic has been welcomed by the community.
