The water storage in the dams supplying water to Mumbai is rapidly decreasing and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has demanded the state government to use the reserved water storage. However, during various development works underway in the city, hundreds of liters of water are being wasted due to leaks in the water channels. Similarly, in many slum areas, large amounts of water are being wasted and a large amount of water is being wasted.
A large amount of water is being wasted as the water channels in many alleys and gullies in the slum areas are not being cleaned. Often, the BMC is not able to keep an eye on the narrow alleys and gullies. Since such cases are not noticed, no action is taken against the concerned. To ensure that Mumbaikars do not have to face water shortages, the civic body has requested the state government to use the reserved water reserves.
Meanwhile, during the ongoing road concreting in Mumbai, small and large incidents of water pipes bursting are occurring every day, which is also causing water wastage. Citizens are suffering due to problems like low water pressure, inadequate water supply, etc. However, water is being wasted in many places, especially in slum areas.
Possibility of inconvenience
Due to various activities like development works, metro projects, water pipe replacement works, etc., water pipes are leaking every day. This leads to wastage of water. Also, the municipal workers have to work hard to repair the water pipes. The water storage in the dams that supply water to Mumbai is starting to dwindle. A large amount of water is being wasted through daily bursting water channels. There is a need for the BMC to take measures to prevent and monitor unnecessary water wastage in slums and other areas. If the daily wastage of water due to various reasons continues, there is a strong possibility that Mumbaikars will face inconvenience due to lack of sufficient water.
Working with running water…
In many houses in slum areas, daily tasks like washing clothes, washing dishes, mopping floors, etc. are done with running water. This results in more water being used than necessary. Also, the water supply channels in many streets and alleys are not closed. Thousands of liters of water are wasted unnecessarily. The BMC supplies 225 liters of water to each house in the slum. However, due to the wrong habits of the citizens, more water is wasted than the norm. In cases of water pipes not being fitted with valves, action is taken against users for wasting water.
