The Western Railway (WR) has started taking action against the passengers who pollute the railway premises by consuming tobacco products. In the current financial year till January 2025, a fine of INR 6 lakh has been recovered from around 2,383 cases.


Precautionary measures are being taken by the administration to keep the area of Western Railway clean. Measures such as carrying out frequent cleaning campaigns, periodic cleaning by sanitation workers are being taken. However, some passengers spit or litter the railway station area. 


Punitive action is being taken against such passengers. Also, the newly elected Divisional Railway Manager of Mumbai Central Division of Western Railway, Pankaj Kumar Singh, has given instructions to emphasise on the cleanliness of railways. It is also thinking of adopting an option like 'clean up marshal' scheme separately for strict action and increasing the amount of fine.

Western Railway has undertaken 'Operation Pavitra' initiative and cleanliness is being reviewed frequently by the Commercial Department of Railways. Instructions are being given to keep the station premises and toilets clean. 


Also, if the work of the company appointed on contract basis for cleaning does not look good or there are repeated complaints about unsanitary conditions, the work of the concerned contractor is being terminated. Western Railway appointed eight companies on contract basis for cleaning between Churchgate and Virar in Mumbai Central section. Also, a fine of INR 17.84 lakh has been imposed so far on the companies involved in malpractices.
