Mumbi Local News: WR collects fine of INR 1.72 crore from over 51,000 ticketless commuters in AC trains

Mumbai suburban railway section is one of its kind in the busiest railway system in the world and is transporting millions of commuters daily, aptly known as the Lifeline of the City.

Western Railway’s (WR) Mumbai suburban network of carries approx. 3 million passengers every day through its 1406 (including 109 AC) services run daily. WR's 109 AC local services sees approximately 1.26 lakh passengers per day.

In an official statement released by WR, Chief Public Relations Officer Vineet Abhishek said that during the financial year 2024-25 (up to January 2025), Mumbai Division’s Ticket checking teams detected and penalised more than 51,600 cases of irregular travel in AC locals and recovered an amount of INR 1.72 crore as penalty.

In the month of January 2025 itself, an amount of INR 20.97 lakh was realised from 6258 cases of irregular travel, as against INR 16.07 lakh from 4,743 cases during January 2024. This is an increase of around 31% in fine and 32% in number of cases detected. Vineet further stated that in order to enhance the travel experience of bonafide passengers and curb irregular travel in AC locals.

Moreover, WR's Mumbai Division has launched several initiatives, which includes a dedicated AC Task Force in suburban trains, Special Monitoring Team to oversee issues of irregular travel. Special drives are also conducted at frequent intervals.

During peak hours, passenger can lodge complaints pertaining to AC Local trains 24x7 on Helpline No. 139 / Whatsapp Message No. 9004497364, which is attended promptly. Ticket checking performance in AC local trains is also monitored on daily basis.
