Western Railway (WR) has introduced new safety and convenience measures for women at train stations. These changes will make stations more inclusive. The initiative was launched on the eve of International Women’s Day, observed on March 8.

The Churchgate-Dahanu corridor will be the first to implement these measures. However, only stations that meet the requirements will be selected. The new procedures will be included in the Amrit Bharat station program, which focuses on improving passenger amenities and station upgrades.

Here are the new facilities that will be made available for women:

- Separate ticketing counters for women

- Baby nursing spaces with baby bag storage, changing tables, and comfortable seating

- Women’s restrooms with vending machines for sanitary pads, hangers, and female attendants

- More CCTV cameras near women’s coach stops

- Additional lighting at blind spots, entry and exit points, and restroom areas

The following security measures will be introduced:

- Field staff will receive training on handling harassment cases.

- Staff will help victims report crimes.

- Stickers with helpline numbers will be placed at stations for easy access.

- Panic buttons with alarms will be installed in ladies’ waiting rooms.

- Alarms will be connected to the station master’s office and railway police.

Here are the planned initiatives for female railway employees:

- Monthly feedback meetings will be held to improve their working conditions.

- Contractual employees will get better access to restrooms.

- A complaint system will be introduced. This may include a complaint box, a website link, or a WhatsApp contact.

- Male employees will receive gender sensitivity training.
