The popularity of AC trains is growing on both Central and Western suburban lines. In March, Central Railway recorded a 73 per cent rise in AC train passengers over the last three years. Western Railway saw a 67 per cent increase in the same time. This shows that more people in Mumbai now prefer comfortable travel, even if it costs more.

On Central Railway, the number of AC commuters went up from 48,989 in March 2022–2023 to 84,847 in March 2024–2025. Western Railway’s (WR) numbers rose from 90,040 to around 1.63 lakh in the same period.

On WR, each AC service earns around INR 47,863. This is about 3.5 times more than the INR 13,548 earned from a normal local train. In 2024–2025, around 46.5 million passengers used the AC locals on the Western line. They brought in a total revenue of INR 215 crore.

Due to high demand, the Zonal Railway Users Consultative Committee has asked for an unused AC train from Central Railway. A member of the committee, Rajiv Singhal, said that Western Railway needs the train immediately. Central Railway, however, said that their AC services are also in high demand. They do not plan to give up the rake.
