Former Indian cricketer and Mumbai batsman Sunil Gavaskar recently reinforced the prominence of club culture. Club cricket has always played a massive role in shaping the city cricketers' career and has assisted them in making their break at the international level. The Mumbai stalwart was invited as the chief guest at Police Gymkhana on the occasion of the prize distribution ceremony of the 71st Police Shield on November 12.
Discussing with the winning team - Parkophene Cricketers - and runners-up Payyade Sports Club, Gavaskar said,
I am always happy to be present for such events because I believe club cricket is the lifeblood of your Test team. Without club cricket, you will not get players who will play Ranji Trophy and then go on to play Test cricket or one-day internationals. Therefore, club cricket becomes very important.”
Alongside, he also stated that the city has a rich cricket culture and club cricket is an integral part of that culture. Adding to that, he also said that Mumbai has a unique cricketing ethos which does not let players be satisfied and always keeps them going which is the key to carrying on and achieving higher recognition.
