Badlapur sexual assault case accused Akshay Shinde has died after sustaining bullet injuries in a police encounter, Thane police confirmed on Monday, September 23.
Sources said Akshay Shinde had snatched the weapon from a constable and opened fire on one of the officers, injuring him.
Police sources said officers from Badlapur had gone to Taloja jail to take custody of Shinde. They wanted to question him in connection with a new case filed by his first wife. The woman, who left him five days after their wedding, has accused him of rape and assault.
Around 6:30 pm, when the police team reached near the Mumbra bypass, Shinde reportedly snatched a constable's gun and opened fire on officers. In retaliation, another officer shot Shinde, leaving him critically injured.
Shinde was critically wounded in the retaliatory firing and was rushed to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar took to social media platform X and demanded for a judicial inquiry into this matter.

Akshay Shinde, 23, was appointed on a contractual basis to clean school washrooms on August 1. Few days later, he was arrested for allegedly assaulting two girls, aged four and five, inside the school’s washroom where he worked as an attendant in August.
As per latest reports, last week, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by a IG-rank IPS officer Aarti Singh filed chargesheet in both the cases before the special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act court in Kalyan. The SIT said it has built a strong case against the accused.
