It was back in 1932 when Mumbai Police was seen patroling on horses. However, the police department was once again seen inspecting Mumbai's Girgaon Chowpatty on horses, and this scene was repeated after 88 years. As per reports, the decision was taken as patrolling was stopped due to an increasing number of vehicles as officials were not able to patrol in crowded areas during the festival.
In this recently taken decision, the department has recruited 30 horses in the Mumbai Police Force and this is for the first time, Mumbai Police was seen patrolling on the horses, at the Mumbai Chowpatty for Ganeshotsav. On the other hand, this was also seen as an attraction for several devotees who visited the Chowpatty.
Reports state that a few months ago, the Police recruited 14 horses to control the mob and keep a close eye on the crowd, and the mode of using horses was said to be convenient, where swift actions and decisions were taken in cases of emergency at an event.
A similar approach is being taken in other parts of India, in cities like Chennai, Mysore, and Kolkata where the police force use horses at such times. Besides this, horses are also used by police in many foreign cities including Moscow, New York and others.
On the same lines, Maharashtra Police had also proposed to buy 30 horses and officers will undergo training for the same. The contract for the maintenance of the horses has been given to an organization and the cost of procurement of horses and all other processes is estimated to be around Rs 1.75 crore. The stable of these horses has been built on 2.5 acres in Marol.
The unit participated in the Republic Day Parade for the first time on January 26, 2020, and this year marks the first time when Mumbai Police officers were seen on horses during the Ganeshotsav.
