Pushpa Agashe (73), a social activist from Thane, who was raising public awareness about eye donation and organ donation, died in a hit and run. Naupada police arrested Mohammad Shabuddin Shaikh (59), who fled after the accident, on Friday. Sheikh drives a bus. Naupada police informed that he was arrested based on the CCTV footage. Pushpa's relatives informed that her eyes were donated after her death. Agashe's eye donation inspired another family who decided to donate the eyes of the youth who passed away in the accident. 


Pushpa Agashe, who lives in Thane, was creating awareness about eye donation. For the past 44 years, she was doing social work for the spread of eye donation. She was also working with her husband for awareness about organ donation. She actively participated in many social organisations in Thane including organ donation and eye donation. On Thursday morning, she had gone out of the house to fetch milk. At the same time, a vehicle going from Mumbai to Nashik hit her at Teen Haat Naka. She was seriously injured. Instead of helping Pushpa, the driver of the vehicle fled from the spot. Pushpa was admitted to the hospital in an injured state. When she was taken to the hospital, she was declared dead on arrival.

A case was registered in Naupada police station in this regard. Meanwhile, the police started searching for the driver on the basis of CCTV footage. It is clear that she was hit by a bus. The police then traced the driver based on the vehicle numbers. Police detained and arrested the driver Mohammad Shabuddin Shaikh.


“After retiring from government service, instead of living a life of retirement, mother devoted herself fully to social work. She participated in various social activities including eye donation. She wanted to donate her organs, but due to the autopsy it was not possible. However, the eye was donated”, said Ashish Agashe, son of Pushpa.
