In the midst of the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic driven by the highly transmissible Omicron variant of COVID-19, on Tuesday, January 18, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Chief Iqbal Singh Chahal while speaking to the Indian Express stated that Mumbai had moved past the peak, thus daily coronavirus cases are anticipated to fall in the coming days. 

According to the report, he remarked that the third wave peaked in Mumbai around January 10 and over the last week, Mumbai was reporting a significant fall in daily numbers. He further mentioned that they anticipate the numbers to fall to 1,000-2,000 by January 26. 

On the subject of reopening schools which has been an intensely debated topic, he was quoted by the account elaborating on how they are now planning to re-open schools by January 27.

On January 7, the island city reported its highest single-day cases of 20,971 at a positivity rate of 28.9 per cent. However, the number of fatalities, as well as those needing hospitalizations, has been significantly lower this time around. A similar trend of decline in cases is also being witnessed in other cities in India, too.

Chahal further elucidated that the body is undertaking tests for all those who are coming, highlighted the narrative. Schools in Maharashtra commenced offline classes from December 15, 2021. They later went on a Christmas break from December 23 and were set to resume on January 3.

However, considering the rise in cases, schools were asked to function online till January 31, by the BMC. Later on January 8, the state government announced that schools could not hold offline classes till February 15.
