As many as 1099 teachers have been made available to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) through the PAVITRA portal of the state government to fill the vacant posts of primary school teachers of the civic body. The BMC had advertised to fill 1342 posts of teachers. Most of them have teachers and they have been given appointment orders.
Although the number of students in BMC schools has increased, the posts of teachers have been largely vacant in the last few years. Schools in eight language mediums namely Marathi, Hindi, English, Urdu, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati are run by the Education Department of BMC.
More than 3 lakh students are currently studying in about 1,129 schools from Kindergarten to Class X. Post-Covid period, the number of students in municipal schools started to increase. Also, although the education department is appreciated for the increase in the number of students due to CBSE schools, schools of other boards, educational facilities, there was a complaint for the last few years that due to the shortage of teachers in the municipal schools, it is affecting the education of the students. However, last year advertisement was given to fill 1342 posts for Marathi, Hindi, Urdu, English medium.
Unresponsiveness of some candidates
Out of the many teacher candidates available, many candidates have not responded to the BMC’s letter. Officials said that only 1099 teachers have been made available at present. Meanwhile, advertisement was sent for 1342 posts, but only 1099 teachers have been recruited. However, officials said that these vacancies have also been filled and additional teachers in private aided schools have become available to the civic body.
