On the one hand, where the state government of Maharashtra has decided to start schools from class 5-8, schools in Mumbai will remain closed for the time being. The announcement was made by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) through a press release which was issued recently, stating when the schools in Mumbai will not reopen in the lockdown.
Reports state that though the letter has been released, discussions are being held and the proposal is being made to start schools in Mumbai and surrounding areas from Monday, January 18, 2021. The information has been sent to the Commissioner by the Education Department of the Municipal Corporation.

Schools across the city have been shut for over nine months due to the coronavirus pandemic. While the situation has been brought under control, the government is concerned about another wave of infection, which has occurred in some countries across the world. Moreover, the new strain of coronavirus found in Britain has also impacted the decision.
Earlier, the civic body had decided to keep the schools closed till January 15, 2021, however, as this period is coming to an end and the department plans to revise the same. On the other hand, the state government has decided to start schools from classes 5-8 from January 27, however, this has permitted across all other districts, and civic bodies have been asked to take decisions appropriately.
