After the enthusiastic response received at the Cannes Film Festival, now after 48 years, the movie 'Manthan' will once again be screened in theatres in India. The Film Heritage Foundation informed about this on Monday. Shyam Benegal's 'Manthan' can be seen once again on the big screen and ticket booking has started for it.
48 years ago, 5 lakh farmers in Gujarat contributed financially for the production of this film which came out in 1976. Two rupees each were donated by the farmers. The film was screened in the Cannes Classic segment at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17.
Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah along with his actress wife Ratna Pathak Shah, late co-star Smita Patil's son Prateik Babbar, Dr. Kurien's daughter Nirmala Kurien walked the Cannes red carpet along with Amul MD Jayen Mehta and FHF founder Shivendra Singh Dungarpur. Shivendrasingh had already said that there is a plan to release the film after this screening, according to which the film is now going to be released for the audience once again for two days in a few cities of the country.

The movie will be released in 38 cities
The restored 'Manthan' will be released in select cities across India on June 1 and 2. It will be re-released in theatres in 38 cities including Mumbai, New Delhi, Anand, Rajkot, Chennai, Kochi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Baroda, Surat and Chandigarh. “Bookings are open! ‘Manthan' is the first Indian film to be produced with public donations. Nearly five lakh farmers had donated two rupees each for the film. Vijay Tendulkar and Dr. Kurien wrote the story of the film. Apart from Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah, Girish Karnad, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Mohan Agashe, Anant Nag and Amrish Puri also play important roles in the film. The film won the National Award for Best Feature Film in 1977. Also, Vijay Tendulkar won the National Award for Best Screenplay. That year India sent this movie for an Oscar.
