The India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials confirmed that monsoon has arrived in Maharashtra on Thursday, June 6, by entering the southern Konkan region, Sindhudurg as well western Maharashtra's Sangli and Kolhapur. This morning, June 7, it advanced up to Ratnagiri and Solapur.

This has brought respite to the people as several parts of the state is reeling under heatwave along with water shortage. As on Thursday, June 6, 11,565 villages and hamlets in 34 districts were being provided water through government and private tankers, according to official data.

“The situation looks favorable for the next four days for advancement of the monsoon across Maharashtra including Mumbai. It is expected to arrive in Mumbai over the weekend, that is June 9-10. Officially, the monsoon onset date for Mumbai is June 10-11 and should cover entire Maharashtra by June 15, Hosalikar added.

Amid the hot and humid conditions, the IMD said the city is likely to expect pre-monsoon rains. The weather department has issued a yellow alert for the city till Sunday, June 9, for thunderstorms with lightning, light to moderate rain and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph. However, the temperature will remain in the same range, with a maximum between 33 and 35 degrees Celsius.

On Thursday, IMD's Santacruz station recorded a maximum of 35.6 degrees Celsius, 1.9 degrees above normal, and Colaba recorded 34.9 degrees Celsius, 1.2 degrees above normal. Humidity was 63% and 66% respectively. However, on Friday afternoon, June 7, the maximum temperature was recorded at 33 degrees Celsius with 67% humidity levels.
