The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has started a project to produce compost from wet waste generated at its headquarters canteen. This composting is being done right within the premises. The project is managed by the Solid Waste Management Department and is funded through the CSR support of Swarnlata Madherson Trust, implemented by the Indian Pollution Control Association.
Under this initiative, four composting Aerobin units, each with a capacity of 400 liters, have been installed. The composting system is jointly maintained by staff from the canteen and the waste management team. According to Dr. Rani Shinde, Health Officer, the project shows that waste can be properly managed and processed within the area where it is generated.

As part of the first phase of the SORT (Segregation of Waste for Recycling and Treatment) project, one institution and 20 large housing societies will receive composting Aerobin units based on their needs. As per the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, it is mandatory for large waste generators to manage their wet waste within their premises.
